Marjorie Phillips Obituary

Marjorie Rose Phillips

Marjorie Rose (McSpadden) Phillips, 93, of New Madrid, MO, peacefully passed away

Thursday, September 2, 2021 at SoutheastHEALTH in Cape Girardeau, MO surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 18, 1928 to the late Roy Vernon and Mariam Rose McSpadden of Van Buren, MO. Marjorie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, William Richard “Dick” Phillips Jr., her daughter Cynthia Jane (Phillips) Jones, her grandson, Coleman Daniel Jones of New Madrid; and brothers Allen Coleman “Cokie” McSpadden (Mabel) and Robert Doles “Bob” (Dixie) McSpadden of Van Buren.

She is survived by her devoted children, daughter Mariam Kathleen “Kathie” Phillips Brune (Brad) of Cape Girardeau; son, William Richard Phillips III (Tammy) of New Madrid; her grandchildren, Jeffrey Brune (Shea) and children Adalia, Ellis, and Harrison of Cape Girardeau; Allison Brune Evans (Charles) and daughter, Cecelia Rose of Cape Girardeau; Stowe Jones (Ashleigh) of St. Louis and baby on the way due in February; Madison Phillips of New Madrid; Carly Phillips and son Jagger Malley of Nashville, TN; and Lexi Phillips of Athens, GA. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.

After graduating in 1946 from Van Buren High School, Marjorie moved to Memphis, TN and worked as a switchboard operator for Southern Bell Telephone Company. Upon returning to Missouri, she joined her brother Cokie and sister-in-law Mabel who were managing the Claire Hotel Coffee Shop in New Madrid. It was then that she met the love of her life, Dick, and they married January 1, 1948. Affectionately known as ‘Nanny’ to family and countless friends. Her door was always open to anyone for a chat on the sun-porch and afternoon coffee. She was an avid gardener, community/school volunteer, crossword puzzle aficionado, sports fan, and loved to travel. The highlight of her life was supporting her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She never missed the chance to cheer them on at their sporting events, recitals, concerts, dance/cheer competitions, musicals, and graduations. A selfless lady to the very end; her kindness, humor, and family traditions will live on to inspire the next generation.
